Help students start school with the supplies they need.  Please drop off supplies at Back-to-School Registration Day on Thurs Aug 19, at Meet-the-Teacher Nights on Sept 1 & Sept 2 @ 4-7:30pm, or at Highland School before classes start on Tues, Sept 7.  Collection boxes will be available just inside the main entry doors. Court Bishop Schenk #2010 Catholic Daughters are doing their annual Back-to-School Supply Project for children and youth attending all Crookston schools. Items suggested are backpacks, white binders, packs of loose-leaf paper, crayons, pencils, pens, markers, glue, kleenex, etc. Items can be dropped off at Cathedral, Crookston; St Peter’s, Gentilly, or St Mary’s, Euclid by August 11th in the specially marked boxes. The Lions Club 40th Annual Junior Golf Tournament is Monday, August 2 at Minakwa Golf Course. Entry fee is $20, lunch included. Ages 8 and under are $10 and include 4 holes and lunch. Call Minakwa at 281-1773 to pre-register by July 31 and to get more information.

The Crookston High School Fall Sports PAC (Parent, athlete, coach) meeting will be Monday, August 2 at 6:00 pm at the Crookston High School auditorium.  The PAC meeting is an informational meeting about the upcoming season for all students in grades 7-12 planning on playing a sport.   You will meet with Mr. Garmen and then with the Coach of their sport. Directions for registering for activities will be available.

The 38th Annual “NITE 2 UNITE” celebration will be Tuesday August 3 at the UMC Plaza Mall. The event starts with the Walt Keller Memorial Bingo from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the UMN Crookston Prairie Lounge. All other events run from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. There will be food trucks and kids and adult prizes. Tri-Valley will be offering rides from the Golden Link to Nite to Unite at 2:35 p.m. Call 281-3072 for reservations.

Polk County Environmental Services and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture are asking pesticide users to dispose of their waste weed killers/herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and other pesticides at these collection events–August 4th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at CHS Ag Services, 3035 Highway 75 South in Crookston and  2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at CHS Ag Services 624 3rd Street West in Thief River Falls and on  August 5th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at CHS Ag Services at 420 South Main in Warren. Farms, business, or home pesticides users can bring their water pesticides to these events and dispose of up to 300 pounds free of charge.  For amounts greater than 300 pounds, call MDA at 612-214-6843. Waste Pesticides ONLY – NO paint, NO fuels, NO crop oils, NO rinsates, NO recycling

The Crookston Ox Cart Days will be putting on a cookout August 17th from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Hugo’s Family Market Place. The always fun Supermarket Sweep groceries race will take place right after.

Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston is offering an evening of food, music, and fellowship on Wednesday, August 18, in the church parking lot.  Food for purchase will start at 5:00 p.m. Professional musicians will add to the gathering at 6:00 p.m. Bring a portable chair for an enjoyable evening.

Bob Blazek, Paul Henre, Oscar Meyer, and Greg Newhouse will be honored at this year’s Veterans’ Recognition Ceremony during Ox Cart Days on Wednesday August 18, 2021, at 3:00 p.m. The event will take place at the UMN Crookston UTOC Arena

The 2021 NWSA Reunion Schedule is as follows. 10:00 a.m. – Open Mic Morning (session for all athletes and cheerleaders) at the Wellness Center. 10:30 a.m. – Registration and Refreshments at Northern Lights Lounge, Sargeant Student Center. 11:30 a.m. – Top Aggie Luncheon and Annual Meeting at the Bede Ballroom, Sergeant Student Center. 1:30 p.m. – Class Meetings and Photos – Rooms are assigned. 3:30 p.m. – Happy Hour Special – Includes hors d’oeuvres, complimentary beer/wine/refreshments, and music from the 50s and 60s featuring the band, Kenny and the Classics at the Peterson Gazebo, Campus Mall

The 17th Annual Crookston Blue Line Club Golf Scramble will be Friday, August 20. It’s a five-person scramble at Minakwa Golf Course with registration at 8:00 a.m. and shotgun start at 9:00 a.m. Team sponsorship is $350, an individual entry is $70. Crookston Ox Cart Days will be having a community S’mores Event Friday August 20th in downtown Crookston. The event is sponsored by CHEDA.

The Crookston Classic Cruisers will have their “Run To The Inn” rain or shine on August 20th and 21st. The event will take place at the Crookston Inn, and Cobblestone Inn.

Kem Temple’s 75th Annual Shrine Circus will be September 10th through the 12th at the Grand Forks Ralph Englestad Arena.  Showtimes are 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Friday, 11:00 a.m., 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Saturday and 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.  on Sunday. Tickets are available at the door.

The Benedictine Living Community – Crookston’s Foundation, will be hosting it’s annual Glow Golf Tournament on Saturday, September 11.
Registration will begin at 3:30 with a prompt shot gun start at 4:00. Participants enjoy golfing the first 9 holes in the day light and after supper, the second 9 holes in the dark.

CONTINUING ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Crookston Public Library has partnered with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to offer free access to the state’s parks and recreation areas. The Minnesota State Parks Library Program offers community members the opportunity to visit any state park or recreation area in Minnesota without paying an entrance fee. The pass provides access to parks around the state for seven days and is now available at the Crookston Public Library, with two passes available per week. Passes may be reserved up to seven days in advance by calling the library at 218-281-4522. The Crookston Public Library is located at 110 North Ash Street. 

The Crookston Public Library’s Books & Brews Book Club meet the fourth Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at Drafts Sports Bar and Grill. They will discuss books and enjoy beverages. Appetizers are provided by the Friends of the Crookston Public Library; participants are responsible for the cost of their own food and drinks. All are welcome. 

Twig and Branch Collection will be held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, running May through October.  Place the materials on your curbside.  Branches must be cut in four-foot lengths and bundled for the crews to take them away.  Any branches or tree trunks not cut to this length and bundled will be left for the owner to haul away.  Twigs may be in boxes or bags. Individuals removing their diseased elm trees should call City Hall to schedule a pickup. Please note that leaves, grass, and other compostable material must be in the clear City of Crookston bags and will be collected on your regular garbage collection day.

In partnership with the United Way of Crookston, Crookston Public Schools will be offering free grab-and-go summer meals for all children from Highland Elementary School this summer. The program will run every Monday-Thursday from June 7 – July 29. Meals will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis from 11:00 am – 12:30 pm.

Explore Tales and Trails summer Library Experience takes place at the Crookston Library through July 31. Read to win great prizes and attend outdoor events. This program is for everyone ages 0-18. Visit the Crookston Library to pick up a reading log or sign up to participate virtually on your mobile device by downloading the Beanstack app or visiting larl.org/explore. 

The Golden Link is serving noon lunch Monday through Friday and Thursday evening dinner. The cost is $6 and available to the public. Veterans meals are half price on the first Monday of the month. Call 281-3072 by 10:00 the day you plan to have lunch. 

The Golden Link has an all you can eat salad bar for $3.00 the rest of the summer Monday through Friday.

The Crookston Friends of the Library meet on the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m.

The Crookston Library Board meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 5:15. 

The Cove Youth Center in Crookston is open Monday through Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Students and parents should call ahead to check the availability of the youth center at 218-470-0149. 

Polk County Public Health is available to answer questions about COVID 19 and help obtain essential services such as groceries, medications, and other daily items at 281-3385.  The phone is staffed Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
